First fish of 2009

OK, time to get this going. I set up this blog to give folks a place to read fishing reports from the great waters around the Tetons, reviews on products, showcase my photworks and, on occasion, rants.

Yesterday, Saturday January 17th, I was able to get out for a few hours on the Henry's Fork. It was Rob, Chris, Mark and I. It was a chilly 8 degrees when we hopped in the car, but it gradually warmed up to a manageable 30-35 degrees. Sunny and clear. A great day to be on the water and remind those of us who don't ski that there is something to do in this area for 6 months.

We rigged up and trudged thru the snow to our spot. You know, the spot where you just know there is going to be some fish eating. They were there, eating the egg just like they always do during the winter. A red-ribbed BH PT was used as a dropper and that worked as well.

Here I am with the first fish of 2009.

Overall, it was a great day. I had my ass handed to me, hooked 10 fish while only landing 2. I guess that is what happens when you only hook big fish. Some of them were mini steelhead, giving my Hatch 5 Plus reel a workout. The other fish I landed was a nice Brown about 17". Rob, Chris and Mark all got in to fish as well and it was just as difficult for them to get them to hand.

Now it is back to dreaming about far off places where it is warm and sunny and tying flies for the upcoming season. Off to the Somerset, NJ Flyfishing Show next week where I will be working in the Bears Den booth. When I get back I will report on the new and cool stuff out there in the fly fishing world.
